Overview
Which holdings-based data are available and where can they be found?
Various holdings-based metrics are available in Venn from the Studio and Report Lab modules. You can add the holdings-based metrics to your report using the blocks available in the “Holdings” section of the “Insert” tab. For a full list of holdings-based metrics available in Venn, refer to the “Holdings-based Metric Definitions” section of this article.
Note: Venn displays the holdings-based metrics at the investment and portfolio levels only, and does not support running analyses such as factor analysis or risk and return attributions on holdings data.
For which investments does Venn provide the holdings data for?
Holdings-based metrics are sourced from Morningstar and are available for most ETFs, Mutual Funds, and Stocks within the Venn’s Data Library. Holdings are currently not available for indices, options, user-uploaded data, or integrated data.
For investments that Venn does not have access to the underlying holdings data, the metrics will be shown as “unknown” or “--”.
Can I upload my own holdings data?
No, Venn currently does not support user-defined holdings whether provided through uploads or integrations.
Holdings-based Metric Definitions

If a fund owns derivatives, those positions are classified according to the exposures of the underlying asset. For example, “US Stock” or “Non-US Stock” will include futures or options on individual stocks and “Cash” will include futures or options on short-term interest rates or currencies, etc. “Other” will include futures or options on unclassified asset classes such as commodities.
Portfolio level asset class exposure is calculated by summing the underlying positions’ asset class exposures weighted by the % allocated to that investment:

Financial Performance Indicators
Table Formats
This block shows various financial performance indicators across fixed income and equity metrics. For a portfolio, two table formats are available: weighted average metrics at the total portfolio level, or breakdown view of the metrics at the underlying investment level as well as rolled up to the strategy and total portfolio levels.
Table formats can be changed by selecting the options in the “Format” section of the block configuration panel.
Compare Allocations
If you want to compare the changes of the various metrics available in the Financial Performance Indicators blocks between two portfolios or investments, toggle the “Show “Changes” Column” on from the block configuration panel. Note this option is only enabled for two subjects.
Portfolio Level Metrics
Venn rolls up each metric (weighted average) at the total portfolio level as well as any asset classes/strategies underlying the portfolio, where applicable. Venn will only calculate the weighted average of the metrics of the underlying investments for which the metrics are available. For example, a portfolio has equal allocations to two funds, only one of which has ROA % available. The average ROA % for this portfolio would be displayed as 12.00% (rather than treating Fund B’s ROA as 0% and displaying the average as 6.00%).
|
 | Weight % | ROA % |
| Portfolio | 100% | 12.00% |
| Fund A | 50% | 12.00% |
| Fund B | 50% | – |
Note the % weight of each underlying investment will be adjusted based on its asset allocation. For example, for a multi-asset fund, both the fund’s % allocation in the portfolio and the % equity or fixed income holding will be taken into account when calculating the weighted average metric at the total portfolio level.

Analysis Set Up
How frequently are holdings data updated?
Holdings data are updated when we receive new data from our vendor - depending on the fund and metric, this could be daily, monthly, quarterly or annually. For each datapoint, the most recent value made available to Venn is shown. Datapoints as of historical dates are not available in Venn.
How are the “as of dates” configured? What does “Most Recent Available” mean?
As noted above, Venn displays the most recently available values for each metric for a given investment. If data is available as of different dates across metrics for a given investment or across subjects added to the block, Venn will note “Most Recent Available” instead as there is no single date that can be displayed.
Similarly for portfolios, if the displayed metric is available as of the same date for all the underlying holdings, that date will be shown as the as of date. Otherwise, “Most Recent Available” will be shown.
Holdings Proxies
As noted earlier in this article, holdings-based metrics are sourced from Morningstar and are available for most ETFs, Mutual Funds, and Stocks within the Venn’s Data Library. Holdings are currently not available for indices, user-uploaded data, or integrated data. Holdings proxies can be assigned to represent the holdings characteristics of these investments.
Note, returns and holdings proxies are currently not supported for Options/Derivatives in Venn.
How do I assign a holdings proxy?
To add a new holdings proxy, navigate to an investment or portfolio’s Manage Data page. From the "Portfolio Management" tab for portfolios or "Analysis Date Range" tab for investments, check the investment(s) you’d like to add proxies to and click “SELECT A HOLDINGS PROXY.” The proxy modal will slide out on the right hand side for you to search for a proxy investment to represent the holdings characteristics of the selected investment(s).
Note: any proxy assignments made in Manage Data will impact all users and all instances of the investment in Venn. For select Wealth Management clients, this feature may only be available for Admin users.
How do I modify or add new proxies as an Advisor in Wealth Management solutions?
For select Wealth Management clients, Advisory users may have the ability to override or add new returns and holdings proxies on a report by report basis in Studio or Report Lab. Any proxy assignments added or modified will impact that specific view or report only.
To add or modify a proxy assignment (either returns or holdings proxy), open the Portfolio Allocator in Studio or Report Lab. For the investment you’d like to add/modify a proxy for, click the “...” icon and select “Add/Modify a Returns Proxy” or “Add/Modify a Holdings Proxy.”
